Syllabus and Homework Assignments

The GFL syllabus was developed to offer a wide range of experiences related to the High Performance Model, readings on leadership, opportunities to network with other educators, and interaction with district and state level administrators.

2009 - 2010

TRAINING SYLLABUS

OCTOBER 2009 (9:30 am – 3:00 pm with one hour for lunch on you own)

Participants will receive a program overview, expectations for the GFL experience and High Performance Seminar training. Groundwork is established to learn the four (4) drivers of the High Performance Model: LEADERS AT ALL LEVELS CUSTOMER FOCUS CORE VALUES  SYSTEMS THINKING. Seminar Presenters will involve participants in hands-on, interactive experiences throughout the day. Riding the Wave and Lincoln on Leadership will be given to participants as well as a GFL binder, “data” notebook for keeping track of agendas, assignments, special articles, etc., used throughout the year.

SEMINAR FORMAT

Two trainers will present slide presentation and activities related to High Performance Model (Ted Henson and Carrie Sharp)

Participants will complete registration forms including e-mail addresses which will be used to secure passwords for the Partnership for Excellence Website

Journal Reflection writing

ASSIGNMENT

Participants should read chapters 4 pages 45 – 57 in Riding the Wave which are related to Customer Service in the schools for the November Session. The participants should be prepared to participate in an activity related to the reading.

Participants should read Riding the Wave and be prepared to discuss it during the January Session.

NOVEMBER 2009 (3:00pm – 6:30pm)

This session is designed to help participants understand and appreciate the concept of Customer Service Excellence. Participants will have hands-on experience in learning strategies for building positive relationships with the community, parents, as well as with school and district co-workers and in creating excellence in customer service at all levels.

Session will begin with a review of the assigned homework from the October Session concerning reading an article, etc. The activity is titled:

READING REFLECTION (20 minutes)

DIRECTIONS

Divide the group into five small groups to discuss the Customer Aim chapter of Riding the Wave

Each group will be assigned one of the questions on page 57 of the textbook. The group will discuss the question and write a response to share with the entire group.

Reporter will share the group’s response with the large group.

Any additional thoughts from the large group will be added after each group report.

SEMINAR FORMAT

One trainer will conduct training session.

Prior to beginning of Customer Service Excellence, trainer should process Reading Reflection homework assignment, aligning with presentation. (Ted Henson)

Journal Reflection writing

ASSIGNMENT: Remind participants to complete reading of Riding the Wave and to be ready to participate in an activity related to the reading.

DECEMBER 2009 – No Session

JANUARY 2010 (3:00pm-6:30pm)

This session involves learning about “Getting to the Fifth Q”. Participants will have hands-on experiences with the four key “Quality” components categories of a high performing learning culture, which, when in place lead to the fifth “Quality” level: Quality Leaders of Great Learning: Quality Procedures Quality Character Quality Community Quality Content

Participants will also, as a role modeling session for Homework Charts, fill in a group chart indicating completion of the Riding the Wave reading assignment.

Session will begin with a review of the assigned homework from the October Session concerning reading of Riding the Wave. The activity is titled:

BOOK TALK (20 Minutes)

DIRECTIONS

Participants will work in their team groupings.

Each group will be assigned one of the Alignment Component chapters: Goals and Measures Information Systems Key Work Processes Human Resources Results

All teams will be assigned the Leadership component chapter.

Each team facilitator will work with their team to choose one (1) of the questions in the To Think About section at the end of their component chapter and the Leadership chapter.

Ten minutes will be allowed for discussion and “answering” of the questions.

Groups will briefly share significant “learning’s” from their discussions.

SEMINAR FORMAT

One Partnership for Excellence (P4E) trainer will present slide presentation, “Getting to the Fifth Q.” (Ted Henson)

Prior to presentation, trainer will process Book Talk homework assignment, aligning activity to upcoming presentation.

Journal Reflection writing

ASSIGNMENT:

Participants should read Lincoln on Leadership (provided to them at the Jan. session) and be ready to participate in an activity related to the reading.

The initial assignment for March will be made at the end of this session. Handouts describing the assignment will be given to participants.

FEBRUARY 2010 (3:00pm-6:30pm)

This session involves a presentation by an “expert” school administrator who will share her perspectives concerning leadership at the school/classroom level.

Session will begin with a review of the assigned homework from the January Session concerning reading of Lincoln on Leadership.

The activity is titled:

BOOK REFLECTION (15 MINUTES)

DIRECTIONS

Each team member will share answers to three questions concerning his/her reading. Team Recorder will record each team members answers (briefly)

WHAT was a key point? (What?)

HOW is it important? (So what?)

WHAT should we do about this? (Now what?)

Reporter will share one key “learning” by the group.

SEMINAR FORMAT

A selected school principal and Partnership for Excellence (P4E) staff member will present seminar program. (Muriel Summers/ Ted Henson)

Prior to presentation by school principal, P4E staff member will process book reflection assignments. (Ted Henson)

Journal Reflection writing

ASSIGNMENT:

Each participant should reflect over their entire GFL experience TO DATE and write a statement/paragraph sharing what they will do differently now as a leader.

Go over the March assignment with participants and distribute the assignment report form

MARCH 2010 – (3:00pm-6:30pm)

This session involves learning about “Power Tools for School Leaders” and a review of the High Performance Model. Participants will have hands-on experiences with how administrators can use the Total Quality Tools with faculty to support the efforts toward continuous improvement at the school level. Tools for school leaders will identify tools from each of the four Q’s – Quality Procedures, Quality Community, Quality Character, and Quality Content. Task cards will provide class members the opportunity to practice selected tools at the end of the class session.

SEMINAR FORMAT

A P4E staff member will present seminar program. (Ted Henson)

Participants will share evaluations of their March Assignment during the presentation.

Journal Reflection writing

ASSIGNMENT:

Each participant should be willing to share their reflection on the GFL experience and what they will do differently now as a leader at the April Meeting. These writing assignments will be collected by the presenters in April.

APRIL 2010 (3:00pm – 6:30pm)

This session will bring closure to the GFL program with a presentation by an administrator with district and state level experience. (Dudley Flood)

Session will begin with team members sharing their statements/paragraphs (assigned in Feb.) with fellow team members. (15 minutes)

SEMINAR FORMAT

Dr. Dudley Flood will be the guest presenter at each of the two GFL sites.

A P4E staff member will accompany Dr. Flood and process the opening activity related to statement sharing. (Ted Henson, Andy Phillips, Judy Phillips)

Time will be allotted at the end of Dr. Flood’s presentation to “celebrate” the participants’ experience in GFL.
